A best friend in high school

My 2 sons enjoyed an evening fishing trip with "Freddy."
It was a full moon over Magic Island, Honolulu.  We fished
from a bridge with shiny artificial lures and caught huge
Aholeholes (sea perch).  Freddy told the boys he's seen
UFO many times fishing there by himself.  During this particular
trip that revealed his secret fishing spot, he had to drink orange
juice for a diabetic episode.  In high school Fred was one of
the most obese students.  He lost much weight in his later years.
Freddy loved to collect 45 rpm records, play the electric guitar (once
played with our band, the Harmonics, at Kalani High School -'63), do
Judo and Kendo and of course fish.  He worked for awhile at Harry's
Music Store in Kaimuki, Honolulu.  I'll always remember him for his
curly eyelashes, greasy curly hair, heavyweight, constant nervous giggle
with his hand covering his mouth, karate chops that hit its mark, and his
sexy talk as an adolescent deprived in high school.  Sister said he
used to call her while in high school and play over the phone the latest
45 rpm vinyl hits.  "He liked me."  He also disclosed to her that
his home was haunted and also all of Hawaii Kai, including Koko Isle
island.  "That's the route the ghostly Hawaiian warrior "night marchers" took.  When
she lived in a townhouse on that island, her son was hit in the chest while
he slept. When he awoke from the blow he saw a shadow moving away.
Her son never slept in the downstairs bedroom, next to the marina's edge,
again.  One of my sons remembers Freddy's car "without car seats" and
that he lived close to the pigeon house in Kaimuki.  Although we caught
nice size Aholeholes,  we didn't eat the fish because my wife said she
didn't trust her family eating fish so close to the polluted Honolulu Harbor.
Once he said he was even knocked down by a shadow.   The funniest memory I
have of Freddy happened in Kalani High shop class. Freddy was yakking with the student
next to him and not paying attention.  The male instructor kept lecturing as he moved
closer and closer towards our side of the classroom.  Then he let go a fast ball.  But Freddy
alertly ducked and I got hit smack dab in the face by the blackboard eraser. My brother
was told of Fredrick's passing and said he remembers going to his house and shocked at
the results in the backyard pond.  As a fellow tropical fish hobbyist, he never saw such
gigantic black mollies and fantail guppies.  The male guppies with long colorful tails were
4 inches long and the black molly females 5 inches in length!  When he asked Fred how he
got them to grow so large, he said "With my SECRET diet."  Brother also said later in life
Fred also studied Kung Fu.  Fred came to me for dental service in 2000.  I last saw him
about a year ago.  He came by the house and bought one of my novels.  He couldn't stay
because his ninety year old mother was in the car waiting.  He said she was still very strong.
God bless Freddy.  Kalani High School, Honolulu, Class of '63
