what is going on in Bombay????

I gave up yesterday on Bombay.

Now this morning, Preeti, Yogi girlfriend(?), writes (not him writing?)
that she is almost "as keen as you" to have show in bombay but need
strings to pull and maybe Mr. Huja is the string....

Anyway, you can see, I hope to also dance in Bombay! My hobby is to
disco dance around the world before I am too old or dead;)

As you may know from this link, I was nationally famous as disco nut in
America. The driving beat and flashing lights did wonders for my digital
art during those years!!!! Of course always with beautiful women on the
dance floor was also really inspirational for my work;).

IDEA OF THE DAY- IF going to make 'fine art' print at that
price/quality, how much for laser COPY prints? Here in America, price
is $1 or cheaper. (theoretically it would be $1/43 in India but guess
printing doesn't work that way??????? Why? Frame here $3-4, there=
4/43?)

The send cheap copy laser prints for Bombay needs. Give me pricing for
lasers, because, if reasonably priced, maybe I should consider making x
copies per image BEFORE you affix printouts into frames. Then I have x
number of copies of all artists' work for next x number of shows around
the world for future. Hey, always have to keep thinking on how to save
money. These x copies can be taken with me back home. I want COC to
continue to be sponsor of such world shows, all part of creative
strategy to suck in hits from art world.

OH, please give this info to Oxford gallery director- it needs to
originate from the gallery. It's free service and gets news out around

ALSO, when I go to work today I shall fax Oxford. Be like old times.
When I had solo digital show at Shanghai Museum (lst digital art show in
Chinese Art History), the US General Consultate was invited and
attended, watched me cut big red ribbon at museum entrance doorway. Very
formal there. Was on night TV news (back then, 1988, only l TV station,
by Communist Party).

I gave l framed piece to US Consulate and he hung it in our Embassy in
Shanghai. Can she ask if I can give them a gift artwork for the US
Embassy too? Hopefully he'll politely as "Why, sure!"

That's it, back to my coffee, go upstairs and wake up my slumbering 11

Dear Mrs. Bhagat,

Passing thought on this from Shubho|
"Should make it a big event and more press coverage...
intends to hold press conf/artist interviews instead
of simply handing out press kits with artist bios and
statements."

Consider adding the following content to press releases to media-

Through the kind sponsorship of Oxford Bookstore and Gallery and Truly
Virtual Web Art Museum (www.lastplace.com) Calcutta will have its
historical FIRST exhibition of digital art. For India, the show of works
by digital artists of India and around the world will be the first
international exhibition of this art medium. Featured and invited
artist is long time American digital artist, Dr. Rodney Chang of Hawaii.
The artist is known as Pygoya on the Internet and proclaims digital art
as "Cyberart" or "Webism", emerging virtual art that is indigenous to
online global Cyberculture. Chang has exhibited around the world,
including the Shanghai Art Museum, making Chinese art history in 1988 as
the first exhibiting digital artist in the P.R. of China. Local artist,
Shubhojoy Mitra, will exhibit works that represent Calcutta. All
exhibited works will be historically documented permanently online at
http://www.lastplace.com/EXHIBITS/India/

All this should assist in stirring up interest in our exhibition, truly
a historical event!

Coordially,
Dr. Chang

I am finishing the online historical documentation of the digital

I need some words of greetings from the gallery for the online visitors
to this alternative virtual exhibit. Also for "about the organizers"

I hope this material can be used to printout a catalog for the show.

Dear Rod,

Ok, exhibition. last evening, Yogi called!!!
Seems he was fianlly talked into responding by his
girlfriend Preeti. Told him a few encouraging words,
send his work, try contact Akbar Padamsee when he is
back. You are right, he is young, doing his grad and
working part-time. Very short of time, struggling
student... possibly did his best. Anyway, he will grow
and learn.

Well all are, in one way or the other...:)

Yesterday, had a hectic time meeting lots of business
contacts, making deals...also met Mrs. Bhagatfor a
while. I am going to sit woth her on Monday to help
her finalize things/send flight details. She has the
following requirements and instructions:

Let her know:
1) Your flight details
2) Duration of stay --- already told her planning 8
days/cancleeation of Bombay trip. --- just confirm
dates
3) Proposes to open exhibiton on 11th rather than 9th.
Wants to see you on 10th and give you a feel of the
place. That okay with you? Will give you a chance to
be more familiar before rushing headlong into the
opening ceremony, meet press, etc.
4)Have a proper press meet/ talk about your art on
another day instead of the opening ceremony. The first
day (opening day) we meet people/press, smile,
interact, take photos, etc. The second day collges,
artistic community, art critics, connoisseurs, etc.
formally invited to a talk on your art, question
answer session. Sounds good to you?
5) Whether a short audio-visual message (10 mins.) can
be arranged on digital art: HISTORY or TECHNOLOGY...
Can Larry or Katy Saboo send that with you on
CDs...avi file or video cassette? Should be
interesting... they can see they could not visit
Calcutta this time but look forward to the future. We
can put up a tv or monitor and play cassette/CD.

Meanwhile I will mail everyone to send their artists
statement fast to me and you. I am working on it and
should be able to send it to you on Sunday. We also
provide that to Mrs. Bhagat to help her frame letters
of invitiation with me om Monday and invite the Consul
general. BTW, don't forget Oxford is looking fwd to
your print as present fot their permanent
collection....in the long run, Oxford may be the right
outlet for selling our digital output in the
country... until those "traditional" galleries and
museums acknowledge our efforts, if they ever do.

You need to do that investing on the printer! I need
that money to go ahead... you can send that to my
addr. or how about wire transfer through amex... that
works the fastest. Once I get the money, I can start
printing and framing. Already got work from:
Ansgard, Tony Tseng, Greg Hoose, Kolya and expecting
Catherine's too.
Yogi told he is sending asap. What about Linda? No
news from her?!!!
Larry will send soon? Also John Rixon and your friend
in Thailand. Include him in the artists list as well?

Hotel...
My friend at HHI did not explain some thing about
costs to me earlier... about a 30% tax on bills at
star hotels!!! I kind of blew the fuse at that!!!!!
Anyway, had a long talk with him and he finally made
him agree on services like single/double room @ $130
(NO MORE CATCHES)... all inclusive:
disco free enterance
complimentary breakfast (go down to the cafe for it
however)
fruit juice/ fruit basket :)
swimming pool
cyber cafe access (but charges for surfing)

If that doesn't suit budget, there are much
better(cheaper) alternatives. Anyway, let me know if
you will still take it or I will make arrangements...
friend will help again. Should get this thing settled
by next week.

More news coming up soon...

Let see.....

no yogi email yet....

You need to send amount.
I will send check by certified mail (money order or cashier check) over weekend.

can't get through gallery fax, sent letter doc. to you and her for print out for consulate

couldn't get through to Dr's brother SR in Bombay last week too. connection to India from Hawaii terrible. busy signal.

Bombay out. Yogi next unless he writes. Or should I give him unlimited chance since YOU talked to him???? YOur opinion. I'm a bit cooled off today in regards to the pain and extra work he is causing me.

will call Larry today if he can make a video tape. format to Play on your end?

wrote Katy about tape too and to confirm gift. now that she isn't going I wonder if the company will take back generosity. if does I'll bring a giclee from my inventory framed - big and nice.

One for ConsultateUS too if you can confirm he'll be there and I can present to him formally.

Need Bhagat's statement, greetings to the world of digital artists, not just those hand picked to be in show. Next year in Europe I'm hoping to raise no. to 25 and of course all will be directed to read online about India's show, including gallery's Greetings.

Try to get Larry to cover on tape digital art history (boring to me and he know the hardware/chip/sofware stuff). I'd rather limit my own talks about my 15 year adventures as digital artist and as curator of online vrml museum for cyberart since 1997. Also about my art psychology and creative process as artist.

If sis has her estimate I can add to check coming.

will try to confirm reworked flight itinerary from agent as she is working to take out bombay part.

OK, will read next letter of yours in Inbox.

Hi Katy,

Anything on whether you can provide Oxford Gallery with a tape of
introduction to Maui Giclee and giclee digital printing? If nothing
available how about at least a tape copy of Jim's tv commercials used
for Maui hotels?

I think there's a chance such tape would be used on Calcutta tv news
coverage.

Please just contact directly the requestor, Mrs. Bhagat, Director of
galley events, at Oxford Bookstore and Gallery in Calcutta-
oxfordbookstore@hotmail.com

Contacted Larry Lovett and he will come over next Tuesday to be taped by
me on a short lecture on "Digital Art History in America". Should be
fun. Then run down to a place that converts home video to TV NTSC
formal. will ask Shubho exact specs for TV that they have to do Playback
of tapes.

Well, I told him to write to you immediately saying
how hard he tried but couldn't. And he said he would
send me his work by CD (mail/courrier). Should reach
me within a week. Also artists' statement.

I never said anything about a press event. That would be shameful. I think a little inspiration angelic piece I did, modest frame and a cash donation. Maybe I can get donations from Catholic church and school my son attends, they can draw pictures as presents for the unfortunates under the supervision of a Nun at their school, learn about Mother Theresa's work, etc. Make it more real to them in Hawaii school. No publicaty stunts!!!!! Of course my image there means so much to me, my family and my spirituality and relationship to my digital art as one is within eyesight of the less fortunate and they too can see the new art form. We couldn't tell media, in fact hide if from them!!!!!

I have also gotten inpsired, due to anxiety to having been slated to meet with "artists, critics and historians" (the Press is easy by comparison to the cross-examining academicians of art) to WRITE. These papers, so be handed out at conferences (can you printout and make copies? I'll have enough weighty stuff on me, like textbooks of history for review on the flights) - should serve as leading edge art historical material, all putting our fledging art form in perspective for the "outside" art world.

Good.

One is for "Art History and Digital Art"
The other "Changing Artist's Role in Computer Art"
Will write third this week, "Art Psychology and Computer Art"

Want these 3 papers to be freely handed out for Press sessions. In fact,
ideally, they have it before I arrive and I do more question and answer
instead to repeating stuff already written.

Organized guy, eh?

Py

I'll be carry
rolled prints from Katy. Look for sizes sent, if need again, write. Be
ready to stick prints (will be curled, thick paper so need strong
adhesive) with rough edges that should show in the frame. Want to
present one to Oxford and US Consultate if Oxford can get them to take
it in formal ceremony at gallery opening.

Be sure to print my own work small like postcard size. On monitor there
OK, at 300dpi. So I'm hoping the print resolution will be better than
that or at least that. Otherwise it'll look worse than the online
counterpart. Did you get my switched jpeg in email (Enchanted Forest to
replace 0chine.jpg for framed works for show)?

Also, seems you have not surfed my online catalog at
www.lastplace.com/EXHIBITS/India/

It's there for you if you need any images, statements, etc. for print
needs. Just download as needed.

Hi Rod,

I am mailing you from Oxford right now. Here's Mrs.

=======================================================

Dear Dr. Chang,

Subject: Proposal for digital art exhibition

Thank you for your various e-mails. I have been in
touch with Shubhojoy regarding the above exhibiton and
we have discussed it in great detail.

On behalf of Oxford Book Store Gallery, I welcome you
and the group of artists to Calcutta and to display
your work at our gallery. We have formatted the
exhibiton and Shubhojoy will keep you informed about
this. We feel that the exhibition should be
inaugurated on Saturday, 11th December instead of the
10th. As you arrive on the 9th, you can be present to
add the final touches to the display.

I shall be approaching the US Consul, Mr. Christopher

card is being designed.

If there are inputs you wish top convey, please do
e-mail me. The galllery policy has been sent to
earlier for your information.

With best wishes,

It's Tues. morn. here. Nov.  16
I will place online at www.lastplace.com/EXHIBITS/India/catalog.htm a
printout abbreviated and formatted version that you may consider to use
as gallery "catalog". Nothing fancy or expensive at this point, merely
print out pages (all black and white including just l graphic for cover)
and staple together on left border. Portrait format (not landscape).
Send estimate to do how many you think we need (100-200 copies, at copy
center?) A thicker paper for cover, possibly different color from white,
white inside pages. Standard copy paper size OK.

Maybe download these pages and give to Mrs. Bhagat's to make the copies.

WHEW!

Took my whole morning of my day off (tues.s) but done other than few
laggard information.

Give it a couple days.

Larry supposed to come over today to do ART REVEIWER section. GREETINGS
section awaits Mrs. Bhagat's text, laggard there but I know busy.

Just in case undependable Yogi doesn't come through with anything, I
took his one and only graphic from his site (by him) and plugged it into
catalog. If it's time to print, and his works come late, you tell him
"too bad", had to make deadline, best we could do instead of leaving him
out or his section BLANK. He's added so much work to this process as an
"organizer". Lucky he's Indian or else he'd be thrown out long ago.

My wife went to bank to do check and mail for you. I told her to add $25
for catalog.

Here's how you stay within budget-
of course no fancy printed, glued at spine hard glossy cover at this
junction.

Just do like students do. Download the pages I prepared today, pick a
hard paper for cover, then copy all pages to make like a term paper,
staple all together at right side or just upper corner.

two versions- one for casual browser at gallery - NO ARTISTS' STATEMENTS

complete version for special guests - complete 15 page collector's
version, maybe with my autgraph for a price to recoup some costs?

Here's the pages. (after you download I'll but links on each page for
the "Gallery's Catalog online version" - left out clinks now so don't
show up in printing. After master copy of pages, run down to gallery
and let them make copies, staple, etc. You figure how much copies of
each version $25 can produce. Here is 5 cents a page for copy service.
Less discount for multiple pages job.

Here is my work, catalog almost complete (need Thai material, just came
in as Mac CD so have to convert files, no Yogi, no Bhagat, no Lovett
statement)

Hiya Shubho,

Good morning to you and India!

Finished the 4th in my series of papers for India trip. Cleaned up typos
and spelling in former ones you downloaded (sorry!)

Please download now the 4 papers at www.lastplace.com/page49.htm (at
bottom)

Add them to the extended/statements included version of paper catalog.
Put at back, after Statements, as "Papers Prepared by Pygoya for lst
India Digital Art Exhibition Conferences".

Evolution of the Role of the Computerized Artist - Nov. 13, 1999
Computer Art- Ultimate Simulator or Assimulator of 20th Century Art? -
Nov. 13, 1999
The Psychology of Art and Digital Art, Nov. 15, 1999
Pygoyan Cookbook for Digital Art, Nov. 17, 1999

I think 40 of this version and 75 of the slimer version without
Statements and "Papers"

Don't worry about costs, I will reimburse if over $25.

Will sign extended version covers.

Probably l or 2 more papers to write to further connections between our
beloved digital art and traditional art.

Got Mrs. Bhagat's Greetings to the artists and online now.
Trying to open Thai art today again. If done, will upload and that makes
the online catalog pretty much COMPLETED!

I thank India for the opportunity to travel and show my work. Just as
importantly, now, is that it provided the impetus to reflect on God, 15
years in digital and 30 as an artist. Where has the time flown?!!!

So my head is updated and my vision clear as to what has been, where I
am now and where I hope to be going post 2000.

It has been quite a wonderful experience working with you, someone it
seems up to my standards of performance. I look forward to similar
effectiveness through teamwork with Cyberbrains.Net.

Aloha,
