1985: THE YEAR IN REVIEW FROM THE JOURNAL OF RODNEY CHANG November 29, 1985
Hawaii Loa College Art Exhibition with Univeristy of Hawaii art instructor, Norren Naughteen Acceptances into juried shows- ex. Assoication of Hawaii Artists, annual Aloha Exhibition at Honolulu Hale, Honolulu City Hall; Windward Artists Guild's Easter Exhibition at Ala Moana Shopping Center (juror - curator, Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art); HAL Red Hot Show at AmFac Exhibition Center; AHA Silver Jubilee Exhibition at Merlinda Lee GalleryQuotation from "Juror's Statement"-
In general it seems that most artists have opted for personal development of a convenient, comfortable, historical style, and confine themselves to safe bounds. I found little evidence of any art emanating from the insatialbe reading of art magazines, (in contrast to first hand experience) as in Australia. Nor, was there the quirky or irreverent eccentricity that comes from isolation --- only Rodney "Disco Doc" Chang's "Artist's Hangout" shows the potential of breaking new territory. Bettina Jones' naive and compulsive figure studies also display great potential. -Mr. Robert L. Smith, Director, Lost Angeles Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA
