SOME RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN RODNEY CHANG'S COMPUTER ART AND PAST STYLES OF MODERN ART

Aritst's Journal, October 1987

MODERNISTS

1.  Impressionism (dots) vs. pixel's squares; aggregrate collection of particles comprises the images (Pixelism)
2.  Abstract Expressionsim
3.  Field Painting (Ad Reinhart, Louis Morris, Barnett Newman, etc.)
4.  Pop Art (Andy Warhol) - collaboration to make art object vs. authorship
5.  Constructivism - pure artistic formal relationships
6.  Cubism - explorating 3D space not found in nature via software
7.  Art Psychology  ( as studied by Rodney Chang)- ex. the peripheral, half-conscious glimpse at art
8.  Readymades - (Marcel Duchamp) - using readymade commercial graphic software
9.  Futurism - dynamic perceived movement in the art; ex. stroke of multiples of software graphic brush as in             Deluxe Paint by Electronic Arts
10. Minimalism - simplified composition, modular repetitive shapes

POSTMODERNISTS

1.  Pluralistic approach to making art- all styles, mixed media
2.  Importance of art object over authorship
3,  Importance of the creative process (creating on monitor time/image processing) vs. translating/reproduction into       paintings or prints
4.  Not purist when it comes to being artistically creative; mix all media, styles, feelings, statements (from horrific to       humorous or sentimental; such as the Hawaiian landscape)
5.  Importance of spectator response to art object (stimulus) over artist's personal relationship to the work
6.  Several directions at once - Pixelsim, Compurealism, Compupainting, Compuprinting and Compusculture; local       and international series production
7.  Sphemeral products (some images never made into "hard copies" but left for posterity on floppy disks
8.  Layered metaphorical meanings in work
9.  Hybrid works vs. ordered categorical efforts
