Susan Kusunoki:

You have the floor to speak of your journey about being the gifted child. Reference your handouts.

MY NEVER PERCEIVED MYSELF AS "GIFTED."  BUT I KNEW IN SOME WAY I WAS "DIFFERENT," "MISUNDERSTOOD," "MISJUDGED," "YES, BEHIND IN THOSE THINGS THAT COUNT, LIKE READING & WRITING (ELEMENTARY SCHOOL YEARS),  TREATED UNFAIRLY, AND EVALUATED IN REPORT CARDS NEGATIVELY.

HAVING SLIPPED THROUGH THE CRACKS AND BEEN CALLED "ECCENTRIC,"  "CRAZY," "JACK OF ALL TRADES," "SELF-CENTERED AND SELFISH," "NOT COLLEGE MATERIAL,"  IT'S A GREAT FEELING TO BE PUBLICLY RECOGNIZED AS "GIFTED," EVEN IF I HAD TO WAIT TO 59 YEARS OF AGE.  THANKS, SUSAN :=)  NOW IF ONLY THE STATE WOULD REALIZE I AM A "LIVING LEGEND" BEFORE I RELOCATE TO THE MAINLAND.

I WRITE ABOUT MY JOURNEY IN THE FOLLOWING HANDOUTS-

Rat in a White Lab Coat & Wired to a Mouse

SURVIVING MALADJUSTMENT-
or living with the infliction of the Art Gene Syndrome

Beyond Cosmetic Dentistry or  Stuck Between a Rock and a Hard Place

You may want to consider what the message you would like to give all educators from your point of view of being the gifted child.

DON'T BE SO SWIFT TO JUDGE ABILITY.  I REALIZE IT'S EASY TO PUT DOWN, GIVE UP, ON THE TROUBLE MAKER OR THE OVERLY WITHDRAWN IN THE CLASS.  LOOK FOR A RAY OF HOPE IN THE PROBLEM STUDENT, THE ISOLATED, THE REBELLIOUS.

MOST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHERS NEVER IDENTIFIED MY PARTICULAR TALENT IN ART.  MAYBE IT WASN'T IMPORTANT TO THEM AS THE 3 R'S AND I PAID FOR THAT BIAS.  THE TWO THAT DID I.D. MY TALENT HAD NO SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAM TO REFER ME TO BACK IN THE 1950'S.  SO I REMAINED BEHIND IN THE 3 R'S, SPENDING MORE TIME ON IT IN REMEDIAL EFFORT WHEN MAYBE TIME WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER SPENT WITH ALLOTTED TIME WITH A PROFESSIONAL ARTIST, LIKE SOME SORT OF "BIG BROTHER."

IN MY CASE I WAS LUCKY.  I TOOK UP THE STRATEGY OF DEFIANCE THROUGH REBELLION TO PROTECT MY EGO,  BECOMING THE "BLACK SHEEP" OF ARTISTS.  FOR EXAMPLE, DARING TO BUILD A DISCOTHEQUE IN MY DENTAL CLINIC AND DUBBING IT A FORMAL "ART INSTALLATION" ENVIRONMENT. AND, USING THE COMPUTER TO MAKE IMAGES, DARING TO CALL IT "REAL ART" BACK IN THE 80'S (BEGINNING OF THE PC) WHEN IT WAS TABOO, ALMOST CAREER SUICIDE TO INFORM OTHERS A COMPUTER WAS USED IN THE CREATIVE PROCESS.  AND TODAY DECLARING THE COMPUTER AS THE TRUE ARTIST, NOT ME, NOT THE ARTISANS THAT PAINT MY PATTERNS, JUST TO STIR UP CONTROVERSY AND THROW ART HISTORY A CURVEBALL. MY BOTTOM LINE, IRREGARDLESS OF THE SOURCE, IT IS INNOVATIVE IMAGERY, OR AT LEAST, PRETTY?

THIS DECLARATION FORCES US TO RETHINK "WHAT ART IS TODAY.... HAS THE DEFINITION CHANGED IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM?"  ALL I CAN DO IS RAISE SUCH AESTHETIC PHILOSOPHICAL QUESTIONS... AND ASSIST THE COMPUTER TO MAKE THE ART... AND CONSEQUENTLY GAIN SUPPORTERS .... & ENEMIES.

You could speak of a person or persons who inspired your giftedness and how it came about.

Mrs. Hamane of my 3rd class and Mrs. Anne Chung of the 5th encouraged my art development.  Mrs. Hamane volunteered me to poster paint all the windows of the classroom with the Manager scene.  Mrs. Chung told the class I was the best artist in class and praised my talent to my mother in front of me when Mom brought the accordion for me to perform in class upon the request of Mrs. Chung. This 1st performance in public made me feel like something special in class (before just a shadow in the room) and probably led to the Harmonics in high school that went on to win first place in the statewide Battle of the Bands in 1968,

(175 rock bands competing over weekends at the Blaisdell Center)

And, in a negative way, my father, who warned me to stop so much drawing and get my grades up if I didn't want to starve someday.  So I became a doctor for my parents and then a professional artist to prove him wrong - someday.

And my high school counselor at Kalani, who after looking at my grades and SAT scores said "college isn't for everybody" and recommended "technical school."  So I stayed in college 20 years and graduated 10 times to spike her. Sort of.

Sharing your works and website.

GO TO MY WEB SITE AT LASTPLACE.COM FOR MORE ART BY PYGOYA. ALSO FOR MORE WRITINGS GO TO MY ONLINE JOURNAL AT

www.lastplace.com/page49.htm

WHY "LAST PLACE?" - BECAUSE I GOT TIRED OF HAVING WORK REJECTED BY THE ACADEMY OF ARTS AND GIVE UP RECEIVING THEIR 1ST, 2ND, 3RD, AND 4TH PLACE AWARDS.  ACTUALLY IN THE ANNUAL JURIED "ARTISTS OF HAWAII," I'VE BEEN CONSIDERED WORTHY 3X AND NOT A VALID ARTIST 7X.  I HAVE FINALLY GIVEN UP BOTHERING TO APPLY AS I REALIZE THEY JUDGE BY DIFFERENT RULES OF ARTISTIC WORTH.

AS FOR SHARING MY WORK, -

"FOR YOUR EYES ONLY," AT LEAST TODAY, I WANT TO UNVEIL TO YOU THE NEWEST 12 WORKS RENDERED INTO OIL ON CANVASES. THESE WILL LATER BE SCANNED OR DIGITALLY PHOTOGRAPHED TO MAKE EDITIONS OF FINE ARTS QUALITY GICLEE PRINTS WITH A PROFESSIONAL PRINTING COMPANY.

PRICING IS 20"X24" (EDITION OF 150) AT $500 AND 40"X50" AT $2000 (EDITION OF 50)

DO THE MATH AND NOTE THAT A SELLOUT OF BOTH SIZED EDITIONS = $175,000 PER IMAGE.  "ORIGINAL"  OIL NOW PRICED AT $3,000

AFTER THIS INTRODUCTION, I WANT ALL TO COME UP TO THE EASELS AND I'LL COMMENT ON THE ARTWORK IN YOUR PRESENCE

EX. GICLEE PRINT VERSUS OIL ON CANVAS DERIVED FROM ORIGINAL DIGITAL FILE; THE PROCESS FROM DIGITAL TO OIL TO DIGITAL TO PRINT.

Is there anything interactive that the participants can do?  (Just a thought)

YES!  RAISE YOUR HAND OR APPROACH ME FOR A BUSINESS CARD TO BUY A WORK OF ART NOW!

What are the characteristics/behaviors of the GT child?

THE ATTRIBUTES OF THE USUAL GIFTED CHILD, THE STANDOUT IN A CROWD, IS WELL DOCUMENTED IN THE LITERATURE.  YOU KNOW, STUFF LIKE FLEXIBILITY OF THOUGHT, FLUENCY IN SOLUTIONS, CREATIVITY, PERSISTENCE AND PERFECTION AS WORK HABITS, POSSESSING A SENSE OF HUMOR AS STRESS RELIEVER.

BUT PLEASE READ MY HANDOUT ON WHAT I DESCRIBE AS THE "BLACK SHEEP GIFTED" INDIVIDUAL, BASED UPON A PHENOMENOLOGICAL STUDY OF MY OWN LIFE, A NEVER ENDING EFFORT TO RISE ABOVE MY DIFFICULTIES AND IMPOSED LIMITATIONS. MY CASE STUDY-

The Black Sheep Gifted Student

How do we nurture the GT child?

FIRST COMES IDENTIFICATION THROUGH GROUP OBSERVATION AND THEN ASSESSMENT.  LOOK FOR WAYS THE CHILD WILL TRY TO EXCEL IF INFERIOR IN OTHER SUBJECTS.  THEN SHOW THE CHILD YOU ALSO VALUE THIS INTEREST AND SKILL. PROVIDE EXTRA CREDIT FOR WORK IN THIS AREA OR REFER TO A SPECIALIST THAT CAN FURTHER DEVELOP THE RAW TALENT OR INTEREST.  THEN ATTEMPT TO USE THIS NEW SELF CONFIDENCE AND SUPERIOR ABILITY AS A MEANS TO CHANNEL  LEARNING SKILL TO OTHER SUBJECT AREAS THAT THE CHILD MAY BE AVERAGE OR EVEN INFERIOR  RELATIVE TO THE REST OF THE CLASS.

What are the common challenges for the teacher and the GT child and how do we overcome those challenges?

WE HAVE TO SHOW PATIENCE AND COMPASSION FOR THE DIFFERENT, ODD BALL OF THE CLASSROOM. THE LAUGHED AT, THE MOCKED, THE INTROVERTED WIMP, THE UNPOPULAR, THE TROUBLE MAKER.  WE HAVE TO LOOK FOR THE STRENGTH IN EACH STUDENT. IN OTHER WORDS, LET NO SHEEP GET LOSS FROM THE FLOCK.  IT'S TOUGH IN THE OVERSIZED CLASS, BUT TRY TO PROVIDE INDIVIDUALIZED LEARNING CUSTOMIZED FOR THE LAGGARD OR DIFFERENT.  HELP THE CHILD GAIN SELF CONFIDENCE, EASE  WITH HIS EXCEPTIONAL TALENT, AND EMOTIONAL CLOSURE, PEACE OF MIND.  IF NECESSARY SEND TO THE COUNSELOR'S OFFICE, NOT FOR DISCIPLINE,  BUT FOR BETTER UNDERSTANDING AND ASSISTANCE.

What can we do tomorrow for the GT child?

HELP HIM LIKE HIMSELF, HELP HIM FEEL NORMAL AND ACCEPTED BY HIS PEERS, HELP HIM GAIN CONFIDENCE IN HIS DIFFERENCE, LOOK FOR LONERS AND PAIR THEM UP, GIVE EXTRA WORK AS A REWARD IN THE CHILD'S INTERESTS, THROUGH AUTHORITY SHARE THE CHILD'S PROJECT WITH THE REST OF THE CLASS, RECOMMEND THE CHILD TO A SPECIAL ED PROGRAM, TAKE GIFTED CHILD RESEARCH, CURRICULUM , AND INSTRUCTIONAL METHODOLOGY COURSES TO KEEP UP WITH THE FIELD.

DON'T GIVE UP ON THE 'ROTTEN EGGS,' A FEW MAY BE 'DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH.'

PREDICTION: IN THE FUTURE WE'LL PROBABLY BE MANIPULATING GENES TO PROGRAM MORE GIFTED KIDS; NO PERSONAL COMMENT ON THE ETHICS OF THIS.

AS FOR MY OWN PROCESS, I WISH I HAD ACCESS TO ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE APPLIED TO COMPUTER GRAPHIC PROGRAMMING TO MAKE MY COMPUTER A BETTER ARTIST WITH MORE SENSITIVITY FOR ITS MOUSE PUSHER.

SUMMARY

I hope my life story and ongoing journey makes teachers see other "Rodneys" that may be starting their creative lives in their classrooms.  Not all will be the obvious winners among the average but could even include the troubled and different. If in doubt, send to counseling for assessment.

- and don't forget, enjoy life, and keep on dancing!  or at least exercise
