HONOLULU - Local children's book, The Island-below-the-Star, written by James Rumford of Manoa has been chosen by New York Times critic Christopher Lehmann-Haupt as one of the ten best books published in the US this past year.
The Island-below-the-Star is an imaginary story of how five brothers sailed from the Marquesas Islands over 1500 years ago and found the Hawaiian Islands by following the star Hokule'a. The book is in English but comes witha Hawaiian version, written by Rumford.
Among the other books cited were those by such well-known and celebrated authors such as Peter Sis, Uri Shulevitz, and William Steig.
